Looking At a Max Block Value Set

Written by Brian on June 24, 2008 – 9:10 pm -

Earthen Ring was down extra long, today, so I took the time to play around with my gear. Aside from the Libram of Divine Purpose, I’ve bought all of the badge gear I need for tanking in general.

What if I get the chance to go to Hyjal, though?

My current gear set has been developed for max avoidance, stamina, and threat generation. It works well for AoE tanking due to the high spellpower, but my block value is fairly low. If I were to tank large packs of trash in Hyjal, it might help to have higher block value.

With that in mind, I decided to skim through Wowhead and pick out what gear I could potentially get to fill out a Block value set. I put the set together on Warcrafter.net, and you can see the finished product here.

One or two pieces may be out of reach at the moment (i.e. T5 Chest and Gloves), but everything else I can obtain at my current level of progression. It’ll take a bit of work, and I’m not sure I’ll ever do it, but…

772 Block Value. Wow. Balance that out with relatively high health (14.4k unbuffed) and some nice spell damage (429), and I would be an AoE tanking machine.

Although I’m wondering if that might be too much block value, and I’d simply run out of mana trying to hold the mobs of trash. Guess I’ll have to do some more research.

With bloc value that high, that set would be out of sight! I’m not sure about going OOM, as I don’t have a high lvl pally yet, I say yet, as I have one at 42, and he is on the way up soon, hopefully b4 wotlikke comes out. (Yes Fikkle, I am going to start saying it for you, in hopes it catches on) Keep us aware of th progress if you are able to grab up all of that gear. I’m curious to hear how it works out.

The reason I’m worried about mana is that as a tankadin you’re basically relying on taking damage to restore your mana through Spiritual Attunement.

With a regular tanking rotation, you’re using up somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-800 mana per 5 seconds. With a 5-6k mana pool, that depletes pretty quickly if you’re not taking enough damage to replace it…

I think I’ll post about this mana issue tomorrow. It’s a topic I’ve been wanting to get into more deeply.

Hiya there, was trolling around looking for block info, myself I’m a pally of course, have no gear from ssc or tk othere then the ring from tk.

I got around to doing a set like this, got up to just over 800 bv,and with triket popped up to..well you know, lol.

We have done the waves in hyjal to try and get rage, got to him both times but decided to focus on tk and ssc.

I can assure you bro,you WILL get heals,lmao..and the healers commented on what a huge diff it made for them.

We’ve been doing it for a couple weeks now. I haven’t gotten everything I wanted, but my block is about 450 before popping the trinket. This seems like plenty to me, now…

The regular guys (Ghouls, Crypt Stalkers, etc) are very easy to handle. The problems arise when the off-tanks don’t pick up the Abominations quick enough. Getting stunned and being beat on by a lot of Ghouls _and_ Abominations can be very painful.

Most painful “oops,” though, was on one pull when I aggro’d a lot of Necromancers and Banshees (normally the melee DPS picks them up). I got hit by a series of Shadow Bolts and such to the tune of ~20k Shadow damage in a matter of 2-3 seconds. I went splat.
